Female vampires once ruled the world. Now they are overlooked for glittering guys with big hair. It's time to point out why the female of the species should be the center of attention.
The Gist: A Dhampir must protect a member of vampire royalty who happens to be her best friend from a plan to take advantage of her newly aquired magic abilities.
Clarification: This film is the answer to what would happen if you combined Underworld with Harry Potter and Mean Girls. By that I mean if you combine the actual scripts of those films you would make this movie. That makes it part action movie, part coming of age teen drama, part fantasy and completely unoriginal. Unfortunately for its box office numbers none of those genre's are what women look for in their vampire movies. Via the folklore of the film vampires a split into two groups. You have your Moroi which is what Lissa is which are basically your good posh sophisticated group. Then you have your Strigoi which are basically your run of the mill horror movie vampires.
Selling Point: Girly enough for teenage girls but enough eye candy to be guy friendly enough to somewhat be worth watching.
Female Vampire Factor: It's a vampire high school.
Now with that being said only a hand full of characters do fang out and the only vampiric portions of the film are the portions which takes place in the school related scenes. Probably my biggest complaint is that the main character of the film Rose has nothing vampiric about her despite traditionally a Dampir having at least some vampire like traits (see Bloodrayne). As for everyone else, you basically just go down your list of teen high school movie stereotypes.
Her best friend/bodygaurd is pretty much her caretaker as well. The above screen cap is from the movies beginning after her buddy Rose lets her feed from her. That's as "vampirey" as you're going to get from her.
Stereotype #2 - really sexy and kind of evil school headmistress. (Olga Kurylenko)
Seductive and as mentioned kind of evil. She fully deserves her own movie.
Stereotype #3 - Mia a female bully who has to talk about and put down others due to her own low self esteem. (Sami Gayle)
She'd probably have higher self esteem if she didn't look like a young Justin Bieber. (She actually gets knocked unconscious a split second after the above screen cap.) At least the girls who played this part in Mean Girls were hot and slutty.
Stereotype #4 -(!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!) Natalie, the dorky virgin no one pays attention to who looses the glasses and mom hair and becomes a pretty sexy evil vampire. (Sarah Hyland)
You know what? I take it back, this was the selling point of the film. It was only a few minutes of the film toward the end but got to say it was pretty kick ass what happens to the mousy little nerd girl.
So there you have it. If I had to manage a guess on how much vampiric stuff actually happens in the film I'd say about 10 minutes. For that I give the film a Vampire Beauty Rating of 3 out of 5. If there is a sequel it would theoretically have more as the film leaves off with a large group of strigoi planning an attack but that is a huge if.
Well according to the official facebook of the film that is the plan and they are going to need the fans of the book franchises help in order for the film to happen. According to the update...
"We are pleased to announce that we are implementing a plan to bring Frostbite
to life! BUT…and this is a big BUT…we are going to need your help,”
reads the statement. “To take a page out of the Guardian handbook– it’s
time to start training! We have to get a larger percentage of our
followers active…over the next 2 weeks, we are going to work on waking
everyone up– making sure they set their notifications to get our updates
and rallying the troops. You want Frostbite? This is step one.
The power is in the hands of the fans. May the odds be ever in your
favor…oh wait, I mean: ‘Things die. But they don’t always stay dead."
If you've seen the film (which I will review this week) you know the ending was pretty open to the story continuing as much like every other book to film adaptation this was just one part of a large series. What they didn't plan for was for the film to completely tank at the box office which is funny considering there wasn't a hunky male lead to draw in the "twi-hard" fan base this film was meant to attract. Either way we'll see soon enough if whatever they have planned works and Frostbite comes to life.
The Gist: A young man gets more than he bargains for when the girl he hits on just happens to be part of a group of traveling vampires who go from town to town killing everyone in their path and since she takes a liking to him decides to turn him.
Clarification: Basically this is Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and basically any other movie with a psychotic murdering family) but a blood sucking version. If there was one thing that bothered me about this film it's that vampirism is easily cured with a simple blood transfusion in it.
Selling Point: This film has been universally praised by critics as a top notch horror film.
Female Vampire Factor: Despite critic praise, as far as this site is concerned it is a huge let down much like the other major critically praised vampire film of the 80's "The Lost Boys". Once again you have a vampire film with one hot female who doesn't look sexy whatsoever and no fangs.
Jenny Wright as "Mae"
I mean honestly I'd hate to live in the backwoods town where the dirty looking girl with the jeans tied together with rope is the "must have" girl of the night. She's definitely not hot enough to have to deal with the rest of her "family".
Outside of the fact that you do get to see her bite someone not much else to talk about in this category. The 2001 vampire film "The Forsaken" which is a lot like this at least has some T & A in between the killing so for that the film gets a Vampire Beauty Rating of 2 out of 5.
While this site is mainly for female vampires I'm a very open minded person so fangs on a female no matter what they are can be sexy. So in this blog I will include sexy fanged women that happen to not drink blood for sustinance.
Primal Sense was a 2015 movie out of Thailand about a young girl who was a victim of rape who was seduced and turned into a weretiger by a woman while visiting a remote resort. A weretiger is exactly as advertised, a person who can transform into a tiger. They do fang out in their human form before attacking making them not very different in look than a vampire and in this film they are all female.
In this episode of the series about 3 sisters who are also witches the Vampire Dairies star played a fanged spider demon. For actual vampires on the series check out my review HERE and for Jodi Lynn as one click HERE.
In the 1992 B movie Stone plays"Roxanne" a girl who's killed by an
animated creature who then takes over her body in order to seduce and
bite her friends.
Vandervoot has played a vampire (a fangless one unfortunately) and an
alien (scroll down for that) and now she's a werewolf on the SyFy series
"Bitten". Unfortunately the transformations on this show aren't very
sexy but once in the first episode the fangs came in prior to becoming a
dog. Paris Hilton - "The Hard Time of RJ Berger" (2011)
On the second episode of the third season of the MTV series titled "Lock-In Night" Hilton makes a cameo during a school lock in. Unfortunately everyone in the lock-in has been drugged so when she is seen she immediately transforms into a demon like creature and announces she's the devil.
An Aswang is a creature of Philipino folklore that has fangs and claws in their humanoid form, can transform into dogs and feeds primarily on babies which doesn't sound that great on "paper" but in this film its pretty damn sexy. Especially the lead actress in the film Christine Reyes. While the film isn't that dramatic or that scary (it's a horror comedy similar to "My Babysitters a Vampire") watching Reyes loose control is a nice visual every time. The movie was adapted into a television series in Brazil staring Daiana Menezes in the title role.
Katherine is the title character "Ginger" in the werewolf franchise about an awkard teenage girl going through the change. The original film is VERY sexual and her transformation is extremely slow and as with many slow transforming werewolves the fangs do come in first. Katherine is no stranger to supernatural horror and even played a vampire on the final season of the American version of "Being Human".
Much like Ginger Snaps this is a film about women becoming werewolves and again, the fangs seem to grow in as the first symptom. As for the movie itself. Sexy would be the last way to describe it.
Another slow transformation into a werewolf. To make things even better Victoria took several photo's with the fangs to promote the film which you can check out in my review of the film HERE.
The shows producers have stated many times that the shows budget is very cheap. That means that most of the creatures that aren't made of standard editing are just different kinds of fangs and contacts. The above is an example of a werewolf on the series fully turned. For a listing of all check out my review HERE.
Based on the short story by Bram Stoker (the author of Dracula) this is billed as a vampire film but Lady Sylvia Marsh (played by Donohoe) as well as all the other creatures are part snake (not bat) and do not drink blood.
The Leopard Women - "The Night of the Witches" (1973)
In this film about natives in the jungle most of the native women resemble vampire leopards and by that meaning they wore leopard print two piece bikini's but still have fangs and bite on the neck.
In the 2005 werewolf film, after she's recovering from her attack, Christina Ricci starts to have weird dreams including going vampiric on Jesse Eisenberg. If you get the DVD of the film in the special features you also get footage of the casts fang screentest.
In this film Fox plays a teenage girl who goes from teasing boys by acting sluttier than she actually is to eating them alive when she's kidnapped by a devil worshiping rock band who sacrifices her but due to a snag in the spell results in her coming back as a demon.
Nicole and Brianna Garcia (aka The Bella Twins) - "Psyche" (2014)
In the finale of the 8th season of the USA Network series titled "The Break-up" Gus is having weird dreams in which Shawn leaves him and bad things happen because of it. Most of his dreams include obscure celebrities and in one of the finale dream sequences he runs into the WWE divas/reality stars as a deformed version of the little girls from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" but with each having one fang and half their face disfigured. Hannah Fierman - "V/H/S" (2012)
V/H/S is a film made similar to "Tales from the Darkside" and "Creepshow". A group of criminals break into a house, finds a corpse and a bunch of blank VHS tapes and begins to watch them just to find out they are filled with scenes of the last moments of peoples lives which you watch as short stories. In the first of the tapes "Amateur night" a group of guys try to bring women to their hotel room to secretly film them having sex in order to make amateur porn. One of the females "Lilly" (whose really, really odd from second one and I can't understand what they were thinking but whatever) takes a liking to the very shy camera guy Clint (we know this because the ONLY words she can say are "I Like You"). Long story short she sprouts fangs, eats everyone in the room but Clint who she eventually turns into a gargoyle type creature and kidnaps. SURPRISE Lilly was a Succubus the whole time.
Ok if you're into sexy vampires and you haven't seen this movie you NEED to see it (This is not an endorsement for the movie itself which is six degrees of terrible but for the downright sexiness of the character Lilith). No "Lilith" is not a vampire. If you forget that fact it's ok because she says it many many times in the film. You see "Adam" the rich womanizing fighter pilot who seduces her on a trip to spring break thinking he'd never see her again isn't that smart so when he figures out that she is a Succubus (after the whole "following him back to California and killing all his friends" episode) he pretty much lumps that with vampire and proceeds to use every vampire killing trick in the book to try to kill her (resulting in the running gag of her explaining to him repeatedly that a succubus is not a vampire). When she fully transforms toward the films end its not that sexy but her alone gives this film a LOT of re-watchability. I miss the days when all female vampires had succubus like traits.
In the TV mini series turned into a television series not once but twice a group of space aliens come to Earth pretending to be peaceful but are in fact trying to take over the planet. In their natural form they were reptile like creatures. Very similar to the vampires from a 2010 episode of "Dr. Who".
In the eleventh episode of the shows second season titled "Can't see the Fae-Rest" a group of rich men are being killed via being crushed to death leading Bo the crime solving Succubus to go undercover. Her prime suspect is a snake fae (Mama Wata) named Lita (above) but she is eventually cleared when it's revealed that her preferred method of killing is spitting venom and not crushing.
In the second episode of the shows second season titled "Iara" the Beastmaster is in search for missing men and ends up on an island inhabited by nothing but beautiful women. It turns out that any man who ends up on the island is bitten by the snake woman Iara which turns them into pigs in order to be slaughtered.
Another short story formatted horror film. This time a group of school girls is being chased by a vampire but in a major twist the vampire ends up fake and the would be victims unknowingly to him happen to be a group of really hot werewolves including Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Moneca Delain (Blood Angels, Lost Boys: The Tribe). Very sexy transformation in this film.
Well, at least she didn't go before the opening credits right? As you can see the final season of True Blood is less than a few hours old and we have our first main character offed (in the first 10 minutes no less).
Tara Thornton has been a main stay of the show since episode one as Sookie Stackhouses angry and protective best friend who's spent her entire life with a secret crush on Sookie's brother Jason.
In the first episode of season 5 Tara is turned to a vampire in order to save her life as she was near death after a gunshot to the head. From there her character goes from overprotective best bud to angy slutty lesbian vampire who wants little to do with her old life.
Sadly she died before we could get a good vamp on vamp lesbian scene between her and her maker Pam (who is unaware of what happened as she was out searching for her maker) but none the less that close calls were pretty good. There's a nice tribute to the couple from Youtube below.
"Full Moon" is the first single of South Korean singer Sunmi's first solo mini album of the same title. Prior to this Sunmi would be best known as a member of the K-Pop girl group the Wonder Girls.
K-Pop group "The Wonder Girls"
In this video Sunmi is a vampire who has captured the object of her effections and bitten him. The rest of the video consists of her dancing while while preventing the guy from leaving up until he finally turns by the video's end.
The main thing I should mention is that there are NO FANGS in this video. Much like Twilight their vampirism is seen through the color of their eyes.
The main selling point for me in this video is South Korean rapper "Lena's" part of the video. Her costume during her solo is the sexiest thing on it. Especially during the scene where she teleports to different parts of the room.
Here is the first full length trailer for the new FX vampire series "The Strain" which debuts Sunday, July 13th. For more info on the series check out my preview HERE.
So I've avoided doing this long enough and I figured I'd have to address it soon enough. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been a Juggernaut of vampire fiction for the past 3 decades despite the fact that the TV show which caused the "teen vampire love triangle" craze has been off the air since 2003.
So why avoid it you ask? Well first which should be the most important, on a site dedicated to female vampires there just weren't that many. You would think with a feature film a spinoff and seven seasons of TV you'd have more than just a hand full of female vampire characters but it just wasn't in the cards (at least important ones that weren't just stake fodder).
Secondly, they weren't hot. While they were pretty normal in the movie the TV translation pretty much turned vampires into Klingons.
There might be some guys that were into that but I just was never one of them. Some of them definitely had sex appeal before they turned all wrinkled and demon like but all bets were off after.
So I'll do my best to be objective here. First we'll start with the 1992 film that started it all.
So the storyline follows a stuck up California Valley Girl who is suddenly forced to change her priorities when it's revealed to her that she is the next in a long line of vampire hunters. Buffy in this version is played by the super hot Kristy Swanson. The thing every version of the mythology shares is that the vampires pretty much just play the part of your random movie henchman. Just bodies to be thrown around and killed so you have to pay attention for the most part for some good female fang action as most of the main vampire characters in the film (by most meaning 99% of them) are male.
This film was far from a box office success but what it is known for is the number of young actors who would go on to have pretty decent careers who had parts in it. Names like Ben Affleck, Hillary Swank and David Arquette had supporting roles to go with the marquee stars in the film. In fact the first person to be turned in the movie would go on to play several more vampire roles throughout her career and that's third generation actress Natasha Gregson Wagner (below in yellow jacket).
In the end though the main things it would be know for is relaunching Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Rubins career after an embarassing run in with the law and being the namesake to one of the most successful and popular television shows of all time.
Where to Watch
which leads us to....
The series which aired for 7 seasons from 1997 to 2003 on the WB and UPN television networks in the US was said to be writer/executive producer Joss Whedon's original vision of what the movie was supposed to be IE darker and more serious as compared to the somewhat comedic film.
In the series Buffy (now played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her family have moved to the fictional town of Sunnydale, California after the events of the film (which took place in L.A.). She hopes to try to be a regular teen but low and behold her new high school is situated on top of a dimensional portal where every week a new supernatural creature will just show up and she'll have to deal with. As the years go on her friends find out about what she does and gets in on the fun, some develop supernatural abilities of their own and every once in a while she'll screw a few vampires instead of killing them (Angel and Spike). In this case you do get a few female vampire standout characters who as I mentioned before are pretty hot until they get hungry.
Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers) - Season 1, episode 10 "Nightmares"
So in the 10nth episode of the first season Buffy and her friends begin experiencing their worst fears. In Buffy's case it's becoming a Klingo...er vampire.
Mercedes McNabb (Harmony Kindall)
Harmony is the mean girl turned mean vampire of Sunnydale. Once the rich snob in high school who looks down on everyone she is eventually turned into a vampire and finds herself unable to find her way dealing with her same high school issues in her now adult vampire life. One of the most memorable Harmony episodes comes in the second season of the spinoff series "Angel" titled "Disharmony" when she follows her childhood frenemy Cordelia to Los Angeles to confide in her and Cordelia misreads her odd behavior as her being a horny lesbian and not a blood thirsty vampire. McNabb also plays a vamp on an episode of the series Supernatural.
Julie Benz (Darla)
The run on hot blondes playing vampires on the series continues with the character of Darla aka the hot schoolgirl in the Britney Spears outfit from episode 1 who pops up from time to time. The most memorable thing she does in the series is that she is the vampire responsible for creating Angel.
Juliet Landau (Drusilla)
A psychic during her human life her family was eventually murdered by Angel, and she was driven insane. Though she makes Spike you would think it would be the other way around considering she is very childlike in personality due to her delicate mental state. In other words, she's adorable for a sexy bloodthirsty killer.
Alysson Hannigan (Evil Willow)
The awkward teen turned awkward young adult lesbian witch has an evil vampire doppelganger in two episodes. The first in Season 3, episode 9 titled "The Wish" where she exists in an alternate universe and the other in the 16nth episode of the same season titled "Dopplegangland" where she's brought into the main Buffy universe. Evil Willow is the opposite of your standard awkward Willow as she wears leather, is very confident. aggressive and had lesbian tenancies way earlier. Very sexy especially the "Dopplegangland" episode when she licks a female victim and seduces Xander.
more Buffy coming soon?
Sometime in 2009 Warner Brothers had greenlit a reboot of the franchise back in feature film format. All info regarding the potential reboot described it as completely separate from the Joss Whedon Buffy universe and Whedon would have no connection to the project. The latest on the film is that it is on hold as Warner Brothers was not happy with the screen play presented to them and they are in search of a new screen writer.
